BANGALORE: This year World Kidney Day, will  highlight women as the major kidney donors, and in India, most voluntary living kidney donors are women. For instance, When Rajamma, 60, came to know that her 28-year-old granddaughter was advised a renal transplant, she was the first to volunteer to donate her kidney.

After reports indicated she was medically fit to donate, the kidney was transplanted to granddaughter, Navya. Rajamma is one example, to show age is no bar for kidney  donation.

Similarly, Manju, a bodybuilder in his early twenties, was suggested dialysis but was soon advised renal transplant. Though Manju thought of searching for a donor, his mother Saraswatamma, 44, came forward to donate her kidney. After their physiological profiles were matched, the transplant was soon carried out. This year’s World Kidney Day’s theme is ‘Donate-Kidneys for Life-Receive.’
