BESCOM gets record number of calls after rains

Rains lashed the city for the second day on Thursday under the influence of Cyclone Nilam with south and east Bangalore bearing the brunt. As many as 89 trees were uprooted damaging at least 10 vehicles. Water-logging was reported in houses and shops in some areas.

People who woke up to incessant rains on Thursday remained indoors due to the Rajyotsava holiday.

A huge tree that fell on power lines at Shantinagar left the entire area in darkness. Five electricity poles fell in different parts of the city. Bangalore Electricity Supply Company was flooded with 3,753 calls between 6 pm on Wednesday and 6 pm on Thursday, the highest in the past 10 years, according to officials, who added seven more lines on Thursday to handle complaints.

“A majority of the complaints were related to short circuits and tree falls,” said Jayanthi Natarajan, general manager, Customer Relations.

“In places where it was not possible to restore power immediately, alternative supply was provided so that poles and trees could be removed without troubling consumers,” she said.

Officials said most of the calls have been attended to and were confident all complaints will be dealt with by Thursday night. Emergency Response Teams were increased from 127 to 150 and have joined the routine teams.

Areas affected included Sanjaynagar, Kalyannagar, Vijaya Bank Layout, Jeevanbimanagar, Basavangudi and Jayanagar.
