Bangalore University VC submits resignation

Prabhu Dev told Express that he decided to take up the new assignment owing to recent developments in the university.

After a week’s suspense, Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor N Prabhu Dev on Saturday submitted his resignation to Governor H R Bhardwaj, expressing his interest in heading the Karnataka Health Systems Commission (KHSC).

This comes after the V-C received official communication from the government on Wednesday about his appointment as chairperson of the KHSC. Soon after the V-C’s secretariat at Central College confirmed his resignation, Non-teaching Employees’ Association members, which has had problems with him, reportedly burst crackers in celebration.

Prabhu Dev told Express that he decided to take up the new assignment owing to recent developments in the university. “What has been going on for the last year has deeply disturbed me. I have not been able to do new work. Even in the remaining few months, I know I cannot do any substantial good,” he said. Ever since his appointment as V-C in February 2009, Dr Dev has drawn the ire of teaching, non-teaching and syndicate members, and recently from Registrar B C Mylarappa for his “autocratic” style of functioning.
