A day after he promised to clear the garbage within three days, Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy on Saturday said that Mandur landfill has been reopened from Friday night.

Speaking to Express, the Mayor said that apart from the daily collection of 4,000 tonnes of waste in the city, there is still about 7,000 to 8,000 tonnes of garbage lying uncleared in various parts of the city.

“I had promised on Friday that the old waste will be cleared within 72 hours and that will be done,” he said.

When asked about the dumping yards, the Mayor said that they are sending garbage to Mandur and Terra Firma landfills. Along with these, the municipal waste has also been sent to a few quarries including Lingarajapura quarry near Bannerghatta Road.

“I have instructed officials concerned to hire trucks, JCBs and equipment required to clear garbage,” he said.

A release from the BBMP said that the Mayor along with Commissioner Rajneesh Goel visited various wards including Chamarajpet, Chalavadipalya, Cottonpet and Binnypet wards and directed officials to clear garbage at the earliest.

At Chamarajpet, Councillor B V Ganesh told the Mayor that there is no problem in his ward in disposing garbage, which the Mayor appreciated.

Later, at Sirsi circle flyover, after noticing humps on the flyover, the Mayor directed officials to install hi-tech joints.

The release also stated that there was large quantity of solid waste being produced by the footwear manufacturing units at Anjanappa layout in Chalavadipalya ward.  The Mayor directed officials to dispose these waste scientifically.

“Owners of the these units should not mix the waste produced from their units with the regular solid waste. If they fail to do so, notice will be sent to them,” he said.
