An hour into classes on Tuesday, students of PU and degree colleges were told that classes would be suspended in view of all- India college bandh.
Activists of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Youth Against Corruption (YAC) ensured an ‘effective’ college bandh.
Classes were suspended at National College, Jayanagar, at 11.30 am, when ABVP activists barged in and forced to end the classes. Similar scenes were seen at Government PU College at Yediyur and Surana College.
“It was a total ambush, with signs of hooliganism. They rushed in and forced closure of college when the second hour had just started,” said Surana College Principal A S Chandramouli.
“It was a waste of time coming to college. We had just one class and our principal asked us to go back home,” said a student from Yediyur Government PU College.
At PES Institutions in Hosakerehalli and Hanumanthnagar, not a single class was held.
“They (activists) came early in the morning and disrupted classes.We were left with no option, but to call off classes,” said an official from PES.
Only two hours of classes were held at all the three branches of Jain University. According to ABVP, classes were suspended in 2,786 colleges with more than 6 lakh students participating in the anti-UPA campaign.
Autonomous institutes such as St Joseph’s Arts and Science College was unaffected. According to B U Registrar (Administration) B C Mylarappa, classes at the university were not disturbed.
The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) which was conducting examinations for BSc Nursing, BPharma, DPharma, BPT and all paramedical courses, had no problems.
“We made a request to exempt examination centres from the bandh,” said Registrar (Evaluation) N S Ashok Kumar.
