'Creativity Has Become a Commodity'

Jnanpith laureate Chandrashekhara Kambar said creative forces were strong and meaningful and they promoted secularism before colonial rule.

Jnanpith laureate Chandrashekhara Kambar said creative forces were strong and meaningful and they promoted secularism before colonial rule. Now, creativity had become a commercial commodity that was being promoted with the assistance of multinational corporations.

He was speaking at the north-east and southern poetry festival organised by Sahitya Akademi here at Jain University on Saturday.

Kambar said authors should keep their readers in mind while writing. “The modern writer faces a problem in choosing his content. Earlier, the writer would choose from what was already available, but now, there is an ethical problem,” He said.

He also said,” Literature seems lifeless without the personal intimacy of the spoken word. It seems to have distanced itself from the rhythms of the life cycle.”
