Loving ourselves is the most important key to everything — confidence, compassion, tolerance and love for others, courage to face difficulties. But this is a familiar cliché, and the most important question remains: how can you love yourself better?
One step is to ensure that you have time every now and then to spend for yourself — to pursue your hobbies, your interests. This time should be free from daily worries and responsibilities — unwinding time.
Exercising is another important way to boost self-confidence. After all, burning calories by working out not only provides you valuable time with yourself, to relax and to think, but also cuts down flabbiness, making you healthier and enhancing your physique.
Doing something worthwhile, like spending time in an old-age home, donating for charity, climbing a mountain, goes a long way. Not only will you glow with the pride of having done something good, but you’ll also feel better for the appreciation that comes with it.
Here’s a poem I wrote for myself (this signifies dignity, not self-obsession!)
I love you, the face I see
When I stare at the mirror, even
Though you are scarred by acne
and by sharp, wounding words.
I rely on you, and will never
Question this faith even
Though I know, that, at times
You may stumble onto a wrong path.
I know your many flaws and
Your imperfect body but I won’t
Let that reduce my love for you.
You are still beautiful.
You can, I know, change the world with
The sweat of your petite physique and
The will of your mighty heart.. No, our bond of
Mutual love won’t be disturbed by
Some undignified bully or a challenge
In our way. And when they do –
I’ll still be there for you. Let’s see
Who can get you then.
