A 21-year-old engineering student allegedly committed suicide on Monday after a fight with his parents over his participation in a rally for sexual minorities.

After he allegedly drank poison, Vamshi Raju was writhing in pain, and his father Muniraju, who runs a business in Yeshwantpur, took him to a nearby hospital. Doctors declared him brought dead.

Police claim to have found a suicide note, with Vamshi Raju saying he was taking his life because he had been neither a good son nor a good student.  But a close friend said he wasn’t doing so badly in studies.

Meanwhile, Sangama, an NGO for sexual minorities, said Vamshi Raju had been depressed because of the lack of support from his parents.

“He is a transgender, and danced openly at the rally. TV channels broadcast the footage in the evening news. He returned home and a fight erupted,” Manohar Elavarthi, a human rights activist and joint secretary of Praja Rajakiya Vedike, said.

Unable to bear the situation at home, he committed suicide, the NGO alleges. “They didn’t want him to interact with members of the sexual minority community,” he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Patil said they will look into this aspect only if the association filed a complaint.
