Did Jaishankar betray jail officials' trust?

Notorious serial rapist and murderer Jaishankar, who escaped from Parappana Agrahara Central Jail on Sunday, was serving a sentence of 27 years in connection with three rape and murder cases.

Sources said that he had befriended some  jail officers through flattery and repenting for his crimes.

“Jaishankar had confessed to all his crimes and said that he had committed unforgivable offences. The jail officials trusted and allowed him to move freely inside the jail premises. They were also asking him for some small favours,” they added.

On Saturday night, there was a sendoff party for a jail warden who was retiring. Jaishankar was reportedly asked to serve alcohol and food along with others.

He was seen roaming in the jail and had also consumed alcohol at the party, the sources said.

He saw a chance to escape after studying the situation. He did not use any duplicate keys or a police uniform to escape, they added stating that the jail officials are now angry at him for the ‘betrayal’ of their trust.

“The security guards at the gate were newly appointed and they did not anticipate an escape attempt,” the sources added.

However, Additional Chief Secretary, Home, S K Pattanayak, who is investigating the case, told Express: “We are looking at all angles. We will submit the report within a couple of days.”

Meanwhile, police sources said Jaishankar may be hiding in Tamil Nadu.

A native of Salem, Jaishankar headed in that direction after the escape, the police have suspected.

Many have believed he pulled off the difficult escape with the help of the jail officials.

A police source told Express that Jaishankar may be hunted down and possibly killed.
