RTOs to check overloading of school buses

“We have already formed squads under all the RTOs in the city to check various irregularities, including over loading of buses.”

A day after the school bus accident which occurred on Bannerghatta Road, parents are worried about the safety of their kids and the police officials blame the negligence of the school authorities, who don’t inspect the school vans. The police routinely ask the school authorities to make sure precautionary measures are taken while ferrying the children.

On Monday, 12 children sustained injuries when a school bus, belonging to Ryan International School,  hit a bike and other vehicles in a chain accident. Police said that the bus was overcrowded.

The driver Timmaraya, 28, who was allegedly driving recklessly, lost control of the vehicle while he tried to over take a two-wheeler and rammed into a lorry, which was parked on the road side. Following the incident, parents of the injured children approached the police demanding action against the school management and the driver for negligence.

Reportedly, there were more than 60 students in the van, which has the capacity to carry only 30 students. The parents alleged that the school authorities neglected the safety of kids by overcrowding the bus.

A senior police officer from Bannerghatta police station said that it is not their job to check whether the school buses have speed governors or not. “It is RTO officials’ job and we have issued a notice to the school management to make sure all precautionary measures are taken while ferrying the children.”

The parents of children blame the negligence of school authorities, who allowed the vehicle to be overcrowded. We are also questioning the school management in this connection. During interrogation the driver Timmaraya confessed that he oversped while overtaking a bike in a narrow road and his negligence caused the accident.

Meanwhile, Transport Commissioner, Amar Narayana has stated that Regional Transport Officials will step up efforts checking overloading in school buses.

“We are enforcing guidelines issued by the Supreme Court with regard to school buses. We have already formed squads under all the RTOs in the city to check various irregularities, including over loading of buses. This will be stepped up,” he said.
