Parents seek SSLC results through SMS and email

With the Class 10 examination results around the corner, the Parents, Teachers and Children Welfare Association (PTCWA) has sought for results to be sent to them directly via SMS or e-mail.

The rise in number of student suicides and children going into depression are some of the reasons for requesting the Department of Public Instruction and the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) not to announce the SSLC results publicly, said Raju Venkatesh BT, secretary of PTCWA.

“Cent per cent results have become so important that a student securing 85 per cent is looked down upon. The critics in the peers group, family and relatives can de-motivate and discourage a child to such a level that the child is driven to suicide, drug addiction and even chronic depression,” Raju said.

“Parents too are traumatised with the way relatives or peers make remarks on the child’s performance. The stress of not getting admissions due to less percentage also affects parents,” he said.

Sandhya Prasad, a Class 10 student, pointed out: “The choice of college and course  depends on marks. Cut off percentage at colleges is so high that admissions to some of the top institutions becomes impossible even if a student has got 90 per cent.”

D Venkateshaiah, director of KSEEB, said that it was not possible for the Board to announce individual results due to the huge number of students.

“This year 8.49 lakh students have written the examination. At this point of time to start a new system of delivering results on mobile phones is not possible. The existing software is not compatible to announce results individually. The Board is in the process of the finalising the right software that can help give out results via SMS, he said.
