When will Bangaloreans wake up?

Trees are the first victims of any developmental project in a city. They have no voice, nobody to talk for them, speak about them and neither are people in power willing to listen, says Yellappa Reddy, noted environmentalist from the city.

Reacting to the issue of  chopped trees piling up at M N Krishna Rao Park that has turned the park into a graveyard for trees, Yellappa Reddy said, “ Parks are the only breathing space left for the joggers and walkers of the city as the footpaths have long disappeared. I don't really understand why even this space is getting encroached upon by cut trees.”

He said, “ What is sad to note is the city planners and government's lopsided understanding of development. Globally, a recent report points out that the carbon-di-oxide content is increasing. And this green house gas is going to increase the temperature of the world. Trees are the natural shield for protection from increasing temperatures as they absorb carbon-di-oxide.”

Totally infuriated he concluded, “ On the contrary what is happening is, people from the city have no problem with the trees being cut and replaced with manicured lawns. When will they wake up to the real picture of vanishing tree cover?"
