Valparai MLA M Arumugam petitioned Coimbatore Collector M Karunakaran on Monday for action to prevent man-animal conflict which causes trouble to residents of his constituency.

Arumugam told reporters that repeated incidents of human-animal conflicts were occurring in Valparai, with property being damaged and human lives often lost. Kumki elephants should be housed permanently in that area, to chase away wild elephants which stray into human settlement.

“High mast lighting should be set up to drive the wild animals away. The Forest and Revenue Departments and private tea estate managements should form a joint committee to address the issue and clear bushes where animals can hide,” he said.
