The high court has directed M/s Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company Ltd (Mahyco) to file a fresh representation on the ban on Bt cotton seeds marketed by it.

The high court has directed M/s Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company Ltd (Mahyco) to file a fresh representation on the ban on Bt cotton seeds marketed by it.

Following crop failure, the State government had banned the company’s Bt cotton seeds, leading to it being blacklisted.

The government order noted that there was only 50 per cent crop yield in 10,983 villages, affecting 54,150 farmers in seven districts.

The notification also said that the company failed to create awareness about pest control. Justice C R Kumaraswamy disposed of the petition and directed the company to file a fresh representation before the Agriculture Department in five days.

The department had submitted that it would pass a fresh order after hearing the company.

In his March 22 order, the department director had blacklisted the company and prohibited it from participating in any tender.

The company claimed that samples were not collected and there was no analysis before the said order was passed.

The blacklisting hurt business in Karnataka and there have been civil consequences, the petitioners said.
