Rain in several parts of the city and state provided some respite from the harsh summer on Wednesday evening.

According to the Meteorological Department, the city received close to 9.2 mm rainfall, while Yelahanka and surrounding areas received close to 35 mm of rainfall over a few hours.

In other parts of the state, rainfall occurred in coastal, south interior and isolated areas over north interior Karnataka. Mudigere in Chikmagalur received 5 mm of rain, while KR Nagar and Sargur in Mysore district received 4 mm rain. Gulbarga recorded the highest maximum temperature of 41.6 degree Celsius on Wednesday.

Weather forecasts suggest that the rains will continue in a few places in coastal, south interior and north interior Karnataka. In Bangalore, rain or thundershowers are expected in some areas and the temperature on Thursday is forecast to reach a maximum of 34 degree Celsius.

According to B Puttanna, director, Indian Meteorological Department, Bangalore, there will be rain over the next 24 hours. “The trough of low pressure is extended from Vidarbha region to Lakshwadeep area and from Chhattisgarh to south Tamil Nadu and Telangana regions, thus forming a cyclonic system. Rain in south interior Karnataka will occur in the next 24 hours,” he said. Puttanna added that the state had been witnessing humidity for some time and that rain is the result of moisture being formed in the atmosphere due to heat.

Traffic jams were witnessed at Madiwala checkpost, Shoolay Circle, Mysore Bank Circle, KG Road and Silk Board junction, according to the Bangalore Traffic Police. City energy utility BESCOM had close to 3,600 complaints till 9 pm in Bangalore area.

RAIN IN Belgaum, Dharwad

Belgaum/Dharwad: Residents of Belgaum and Dharwad received rain on Wednesday, and it helped bring down the mercury level. In Belgaum, the rain lashed the city for about 20 minutes. Though it was not a heavy downpour, power supply was disrupted in many areas. No damage to life or property was reported.
