Cops Chase Prof Who Stole Laptop

Bangalore police have registered a case against a 55-year-old professor from Delhi who allegedly stole an MNC employee’s laptop at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on February 22.

The police received information on the accused, Prof Tilak, from the Central Industrial Force (CISF).

Tilak is said to have walked away with an unattended laptop at the airport and was identified three days ago when CISF officers found his LinkedIn profile.

The professor teaches at a private university in Delhi. The Bangalore police have registered a case of theft under section 379 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on February 26 when the CISF informed them about the incident.

CISF officers, who man airports across the country, received the complaint on February 26 when the MNC executive Venkatesh claimed  his laptop was picked by someone in the security check area on February 22.

“After going through CCTV footage, the CISF zeroed in on a passenger who was seen slipping the machine in his bag. Based on his appearance and his movements from the check-in counter to the boarding gate, we figured which flight he was taking”, said O P Singh, Additional Director General (airport security).

The concerned airlines were asked to share details of all 129 passengers on board and the CISF short-listed three possible suspects, said Singh.  “When we confronted him over phone with the evidence, he admitted to having taken the laptop by mistake,” Singh said.

Interestingly, Tilak is said to have left the laptop in a dust bin outside one of the MNCs’ office in Noida and called the company. “The laptop is now with the company,” said Singh.
