Students Participate in Career Guidance Programme

CHENNAI: Around 240 students of Classes 9 and 10 of city schools converged in St John's Public School to participate in a one-day exposure titled ‘Career Guidance — Aptitude and Focus’ recently.

The event was organised for students to inform them about academic orientation, counselling and guidance, so that they can make a conscious choice of subjects at the senior secondary stage.

The programme provided practical inputs , insight and guidance on the required aptitude , competencies , knowledge , skills and prospects of the following subjects — English and languages, maths, physical and biological science, sports and games, fine arts and aesthetic education. Ten chosen professionals from the field of higher education and corporate world provided 10 interesting sessions, covering the following interceptions:

Introduction to the World of Careers — Thought process, awakening, planning and personality development

Self evaluation and aptitude assessment

Guidance to understand the students’ own special ability, academic interest and favourite subjects of study

Required professional desire - Insight, aptitude, competencies and vocational skills

Exposure to different subject groups, study options , and subject oriented career pathways

Guidance and counselling in the choice of subject groups in Class 11 — The entry to future career

Concentric strategies in career focus

Dr R Kishore Kumar, the convener of the programme, said that career guidance should be an integral part of school curriculum at the secondary school stage. It will help students find their interest in key subjects through Classes 11 and 12.

The participants exercised a deep sense of caution, maturity and responsibility while choosing career options that would determine their degree of success, satisfaction and significance in life.
