BANGALORE: Onam, one of the biggest festivals in Kerala straddles the secular and the sacred as it celebrates the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali as well as a good harvest.
The festival is usually celebrated across social strata and communities with music, dance and great fanfare. Food is another significant part of this festival and the grand feast called Onam Sadhya is an indispensable part of the celebration.
Nearly every Keralite makes their version of the Onam Sadhya.
Traditionally the feast was served on a plantain leaf and presented on the last day of the festival. The spread would include 13-15 vegetable dishes and curries along with pickles, papadams and the sweet dish called payasam.
The famous Malayalam proverb Kaanam Vittum Onam Unnanam meaning “One must have the Onam lunch even if one is forced to sell his property” highlights the significance of this meal.
