A 43-year-old labour contractor fell to death along with a sand lifter from the 15th floor of an apartment on Lavelle Road near Cubbon Park on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Subramani, a native of Kuppam in Andhra Pradesh, living at Ramamurthy Nagar in the city. He was working as a labour contractor and was taking care of the maintenance of a few buildings in the city.

The police said the incident took place when Subramani was lifting sand bags with a temporary lifting machine at Basappa Complex. Renovation works were going on at the fourth floor and Subramani, who had taken the contract, was pulling sand bags from the ground floor, while two other workers were busy working on windows.

The overloaded machine toppled  and he lost his balance when he tried to pull it. He fell along with machine. A security guard at the complex rushed to the spot and took him to a private hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Investigations revealed that no precautionary measures had been taken during the work. Cubbon Park police registered a case of negligence against the building owner.
