A Soiree with Couture

Saturday night was all about glamour, fashion and Bollywood as Manish Malhotra teamed up with PC Jeweller to scorch the runway at TNIE Style Extravanganza, held at ITC Gardenia.

With high profile guests vying for the best seat in the house, Malhotra and his team of top Indian models brought to the ramp the season’s most coveted creations.

We take you behind the scenes of this high couture night.

Malhotra brought to the city his Spring/Summer collection, which debuted at the recently concluded Lakme Fashion Week Summer Resort 2014. Ranging from pure whites to subtle pinks and midnights blues, Malhotra blended sequinned embellishments with traditional self-on-self chikankari embroidery for a line that carried a rare mix of light and glamour. Summer fabrics of crepe, soft silk and chiffon ruled the ramp as cuts became more linear and silhouettes retained a sense of structure in everything from the a-line lehengas to the bandhgalas teamed with Patiala pants for men.

The striking highlight of the collection, however, was the choli or blouse that had a well-defined bodice contrasted by a sheer net back.

Vertical panels taken from the lehenga fabric were completed with soft nets in the same hues while some saw the net edged with embroidery and others kept it simple with nothing but net to cover the back.

“It is a great way to retain a touch of Indian modesty while adding a certain oomph and chutzpah to the look,” says Malhotra of the collection that has been made keeping the Indian summer bride in mind - breathable fabrics, short sleeves and the ultra-light net influence.

Malhotra collaborated with PC Jeweller to complete the bridal look with beautifully crafted pieces that ranged from the traditional Polki and Temple-inspired sets to the more modern ones all with high quality diamonds and other precious stones.

With each piece carefully selected to complement the  ensembles, glamour truly meet couture on this ramp. Show-stopper  Kangana Ranaut sashayed radiantly down the runway in an elegant white ensemble that had a plain sleeveless choli and gathered lehenga topped by a layer of sheer net with intricately embroidered geometric motifs.

A diamond-studded choker with an angular row of ruby florets made for a striking contrast and a glamourous finale to the city’s date with couture.
