Writer Bolwar Mohammed Kunhi on Tuesday questioned the need to pursue mother tongue as a medium of instruction when it has failed to provide livelihood.

Speaking at the inauguration of a theatre festival for children organised by Rangayana repertory, he said, “We admit our children to English medium schools though we all urge people to admit their children in Kannada medium schools on public platforms. I am not telling that it is wrong to admit children to English medium schools. I can’t lie to appease the gathering and government but I can say that why should one learn our language when it fails to get livelihood.”

He advised parents to give their children the freedom to choose their own areas of interest and not restrict them.
