Duo Dupe Medical Aspirant, Held

BENGALURU:  The Kengeri police on Sunday arrested two men for duping a student of Rs 11 lakh after promising her a medical seat in a reputed college in the city.

The accused have been identified as Rajesh Kumar alias Akash alias Avishek Banerjee alias Neeraj Singh (24) and Ashwin Modi (23). The police recovered `4.52 lakh from the duo. Their aides Prabhakar, Shubu and Yogesh are absconding.

Rajesh, a BE dropout and native of West Bengal, was residing at Kodigehhalli near Yelahanka. Ashwin, a resident of Vidyaranyapura, is a diploma holder and was working as a medical representative.

The police said the accused managed to obtain details of Shivangini, a medical seat aspirant, from KEA website. They contacted her and promised her a seat in a private college on Uttarahalli Road near Kengeri. On October 24, Shivangini, along with her father Santosh Kumar Gupta, arrived in the city. Ashwini and Rajesh took them to the college and applied for a seat after taking money from Gupta.

The next day, Gupta called their mobile phone, which remained switched off. His suspicions aroused, Gupta approached the Kengeri police and filed a complaint.

The police contacted the accused in the guise of a medical seat aspirant and agreed to pay `45 lakh. They decided to meet at a hotel on Brigade Road, where they were nabbed.
