BANGALORE: Students of Bangalore University need not worry about the new rules framed by the University Grants Commission on degree classification after every semester or academic year.

Bangalore University has decided to award up to 0.5 per cent grace marks for those falling short of the required marks for first class or high second class.

The decision was taken at a recent meeting of University officials chaired by Vice-chancellor B Thimme Gowda.

The V-C told Express, “Many students may miss the first or higher second class by a whisker. In the interest of students, we have decided to award them grace marks of upto 0.5 per cent.”

According to the norms introduced by the University Grants Commission, one needs to secure 60.01 per cent marks for first class.

If the candidate scores exactly 60 per cent, he/she will be awarded a higher second class.

“Even if a student gets 59.9 per cent, it will be marked as higher second class and this will disappoint the student. To avoid this scenario, we will award grace marks of 0.2 per cent to bring them to first class,” said Thimme Gowda.

Meanwhile, there is also a proposal by the university before the state government for subject-wise grace marks.

“We sent the proposal a few months ago, but we received some queries from the government and are clarifying them,” said Thimme Gowda.

The general proposal by the university is to give a minimum of two grace marks per paper which can be subtracted from another paper where the student has secured more marks.

The Vice-Chancellor said a system of awarding grace marks existed earlier, but was banned for some reasons.
