Young Voters Raring To Go

BENGALURU: The mood among young voters, many of them first-timers, is upbeat and expectation high, with the BBMP election drawing close.

Over 200 representatives from various colleges in the city attended an awareness programme organised by the BBMP at the Jnanajyoti Auditorium here on Tuesday. Express caught up with some of them.

Mohan Kumar, a first-year BCom student of BBMP Degree College, Mysuru Road, said he will support a young candidate who will work towards improving the living standards of people and eliminate poverty.

Brugu, a second-year BCA student at APS College, feels the election is an expression of public opinion and has the power to change the system. His collegemate Shazma Banu says elections are a process of selecting leaders who can serve the public. He/she should be capable of handling public problems impartially. According to Tejaswini, a third-year BCom student at Aurobindo College, elections mirror the people’s choice. She wants to elect a development-oriented young candidate.

Madhushree, a third-year student of Patel Group of Institutions said it is the society’s responsibility to elect the right person with a good background. “Choose a candidate who is helpful and aware of public problems,” she added. Vishal, a final-year BCom student at SMSG Jain College, expressed hope that the elections will bring about a positive change.

However, some of the youngsters expressed apprehension over the electoral process. Goutami, a first-year BBA student of MLA College said elections have become just a game for politicians. Faizan, a student of St Joseph’s College, said elections are a waste of time and money. “A person must have basic knowledge of the Constitution and have leadership qualities,” he said.
