After Beating Up Wife Over 'Affair', Man Hangs Self

BENGALURU: Upset over his wife’s alleged affair with a hospital worker, a 29-year-old cab driver committed suicide after recording his statement on his mobile phone. The incident was reported in Madanayakanahalli police limits in the outskirts of the city. Family of the deceased, Venkatesh, has filed a case against the Vani Vilas Hospital worker.

Venkatesh was a resident of Bettahalli near Nelamangala. He was married to Jayalakshmi and the couple have two children. A police officer said last Friday, Venkatesh quarrelled with his wife after going through her phone records and seeing calls and messages from Shivu alias Prashanth, who works at the hospital’s malnutrition ward.

In a fit of rage, he assaulted Jayalakshmi, who fell down unconscious. Fearing he had killed her, he hanged himself after recording a video explaining why he had taken the step and naming his wife and Shivu as responsible for his death.

When Jayalakshmi regained consciousness she saw Venkatesh’s body and fled with her kids in tow. Venkatesh’s mother came to the house on Saturday and found the body.

Two weeks ago, Jayalakshmi had admitted her two-year-old son at Vani Vilas Hospital. Shivu attempted to delay the boy getting discharged, saying he needed more treatment. Venkatesh became suspicious and decided to keep an eye on his wife.

Police said they were looking at charging Shivu with abetment of suicide, but he has not been going to work since Venkatesh’s death. It is said that he was scheduled to get married soon.
