BENGALURU: A friend in Dubai and I have started a ritual. We meet at least once a year in an exotic new location and so this year, after much planning, we decided to visit Sri Lanka. And I am so glad we did. Two girls. 1,300 kms. And just seven days to discover the diverse beauty of Sri Lanka. A camera. And a series of unforgettable images.
Rapturous oceans
This was our first view of the seaside in Colombo, and made for the perfect picture as our train travelled through most of the west coast of Sri Lanka. A train is a rather affordable way to travel through the beach towns of Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna.
Feast for the soul
Sri Lankans love their seafood just as much as they love their heritage. We gorged on the freshest seafood in Hikkaduwa, but the Century Seafood Platter at the Cricket Club Cafe in Colombo certainly gave it a run for its money.
Perfect welcome
I doubt if there is a better way to welcome travellers who’ve traversed miles in their car or plane than serving them coconut water with a hot towelette. This was just a perfect memory at the Cattleya Villa, Hikkaduwa.
Azure luxury
It’s not everyday that you can walk out of your room and slip right into the pool. Cattleya Villa in Hikkaduwa, gave us just that privilege! If you don’t mind the secluded location, this resort is a perfect place to unwind.
Lazy stroll
There is much in Sri Lanka reminiscent of the Portuguese. Walk along the coast and admire the Galle Fort or simply walk through the old Portuguese streets one quiet evening.
RIPE flavours
Be open to try something new and stop by the side of the road to devour a couple of rambutans. Verdict: It’s a cross between a grape and a lychee. And it is delicious!
Free and Wild
Amidst all the beauty of the beaches, don’t forget the national parks. The Yala National Park, to the south of Sri Lanka is the most famous for sighting leopards. Visit the park during summer and you will find most of the animals near one of the watering holes.
Rocky climb
Mythology says this was created to protect King Kashyapa but today Sigiriya Rock makes for a good climb and has 750 challenging steps to be precise. Tip: Make sure you carry water, as beverages are not sold around this place.
A love like no other
Visit Sri Lanka. It’s a country worth falling in love with.
