MG ROAD: After the warm response to Dramatica 1, Saarthak Productions will present Dramatica Volume 2 and stage four selected short plays in English in the city.The plays have been selected fromMotleymeow.com, an initiative to connect theatre practitioners across the globe. Each play has been selected for its originality. This is a platform for young and creative playwrights, directors and actors to explore and experiment. Dramatica aims to bring in new stories with the context of today into theatre.
And Saarthak nurtures artists to showcase their abilities, to push beyond limitations and create a deep and meaningful theatre experience for the audience.
In a chat with City Express, Shaurya Singh of Saaarthak tells us more:
How was the process of putting this event together ?
Dramatica is not just an event. It is all about the experience of good theatre. We as Saarthak Productions have been doing theatre in Bengaluru for over two years now. And we noticed that when people want to join theatre, they are lost. We came up with this concept to support those who want to get into theatre but have no idea where to begin. Dramatica is that starting point. It’s a very intensive training programme for new actors and directors which results in a show. Our main aim is to create a good theatre culture and a solid foundation for understanding theatre as an art form.
What was the selection process like?
We have selected plays from well-known playwrights from all over the world. In this volume, we have plays by Mark Harvey Levine, Aaron Adair,Lynn Steven Johanson and Ron Burch.Each one of these plays is very engaging, is filled with emotions and at the same time has a deep insight into life. Each one of these plays has been staged in various parts of the world. The audience loved the performances in our first volume, which was a sold-out show. Everyone who attends Dramatica Volume 2 will absolutely love the plays this time around too.
What are you planning next?
We will soon be announcing an audition for the next actors and directors programme and we are very excited about the overwhelming response we are getting already. Bengaluru is soon becoming India’s theatre hub. We see Dramatica as the platform where new people can build a strong foundation of learning this art form. Dramatica covers all the basics and we also invite experts from the industry to conduct sessions on various topics during the process. Students from our previous volume have gone on to work with several other productions and have also put up their own plays.
Synopsis of the four short plays
Scripted
This play is about a couple who wake up to find the script of the play that they are in and that everything they do, every word they’re about to say has already been written down for them.
Can we sleep now?
This is again about a young couple, Manprasad and Madhuri, who experience a difficult night at a roadside motel. This play is about how life-defining decisions relate to the concept of hope.
Something from nothing
This play is about a man and a woman finding themselves in some bizarre, black space with no memories and trying to coming to terms with it. During this short snippet of time, they try to discover the nature of this strange reality and why they are there.
Polly
When Maureen goes to meet her best friend’s new girlfriend, little did she suspect it would be a parrot. Or is it? With this basic plot, the play touches the deepest meanings of relationships and their significance.
Each play will be of 12 to 15 minutes each. The total duration of the show will be around 1 hour.
Children below 12 years of age are not allowed.
