QUEEN'S ROAD:A mobile app, now in the making, will tell you everything you need to know to be able to harvest rain.
The Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) is collaborating with the Indian Institute of Science to help individual homes instal rainwater systems.
They say it is the first of its kind in the world, and plan to launch it in the second week of August. The project is funded by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).
The app is meant for citizens of Bengaluru, and is designed to guide then on the materials and processes involved in harvesting rain.
Prof M S Mohan Kumar, Secretary, KSCST, is guiding the project. A R Shiva Kumar, Principal Investigator, Rainwater Harvesting, KSCST, said the app calculates how much rooftop rainwater is available in a year. The user has to enter site area, roof area, number of people in the house, daily average use of water and other details.
Information being used for the app is already available on the KSCST website on a spreadsheet. The app also gives details about the need for rainwater harvesting, annual rainfall and ground water recharging. Visit www.kscst.iisc.ernet.in/rwh.html
