BENGALURU: A Kannada-English dictionary containing 1,60,000 words in three volumes was released in the city on Sunday.  The dictionary, running into 4,750 pages, is priced `3,000.

The dictionary was compiled by V Krishna, a commerce graduate, who has served in both government and private firms in the finance sector.

Speaking after releasing the dictionary, lexicographer G Venkatasubbiah said Krishna worked for 30 years on the dictionary that contains four times more information than that of Reverend Ferdinand Kittel’s Kannada-English dictionary.

Folklorist Go Ru Channabasappa lashed out at the government for not supporting Krishna in bringing out such a work. “No one in the government helped him when he was running from pillar to post seeking financial support from the government,” he added.

He said the government should also provide funds for its institutions to buy this dictionary as many may have financial constraints.

Kannada writer Dr T Govindaraju said the dictionary will help students of Kannada and English.

The Kannada Sahitya Parishat felicitated Krishna and presented him a citation and RS 1 lakh.
