BENGALURU: The second Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) Dog Show began at the hockey grounds behind Hebbal’s veterinary college campus here on Saturday.

Six new dog breeds - African Boarboel, Somai, Russel Rerror, Snahazuer and Smooth Hair Fox Terror - were introduced in the show organised by the Mysore Kennel Club (MKC).

MKC, Bengaluru president Yathiraj said, “The two-day dog championship showcases different breeds of dogs. We would like to create awareness about a dog being a good companion and also want to educate the public about dogs and how to rear them.” The number of entries to this year’s show has increased to 600 from last year’s 400, said Yathiraj. The selection is done based on specifications as per FCI protocols, he added.

Lakshmi Raj, a resident of Magadi said she as able to know about different dog breeds in India after visiting the show. “It is indeed important to organise such a show at a time when the population of certain breeds is declining.” There were many first time participants from Bengaluru who were excited to bring their dogs. They said they got an opportunity to see a variety of breeds.

The show was inaugurated by Additional Commissioner of Police Prathap Reddy.
