BENGALURU: Kitschy style is the signature mantra of Levitate, one of the city’s earliest stores that explored the wild side of fashion. The store has maintained its bohemian vibe with a melange of unique accessories and lifestyle products that channel Indian exotica and global design perspectives without ever losing  its sense of humour.

This is a good time for the store to do something new as it turns 13 this year. Meghna Khanna, the founder of Levitate says, “We are planning a really interesting exhibition of sarees for the first time ever and are inviting a designer from Mumbai to show his work. His name is Nilesh and he works with a brand called Mausam. He creates a real interesting mix of fabrics and prints and attaches pieces of fabric to make a saree look quirky and elegant. We thought, this would be a good time to showcase the saree as the 100 Saree Pact originated in Bengaluru and has taken social media by storm across the country.”

The fashion fiesta will showcase specially crafted handloom sarees created by fusing traditional notes of  jute, Mangalgiri, Kalamkari, Ikat, Chanderi etc with what Meghna, terms as, “Desi Funk.”  The sarees hence become perfect statement pieces.

She continues, “Levitate tries to fill in the gap between high-end designer stores and streets overflowing with Chinese goods. I wanted to fill that gap with handmade things. And Bengaluru is, and has always been the best market with open-minded people experimenting with new styles. That we have succeeded in what we set out to do is obvious.”

Adds Meghna, “Our store has been offering sarees but never before have we showcased a designer range. It is exciting since Nilesh has created a fusion line.”

Nilesh says, “I have crafted handloom sarees by fusing various fabrics. Each and every saree is a work of imagination. I don’t like to play with a single fabric and hence choose to fuse fabrics to create a one of its kind range.”

Date: August 7, 8 and 9.
