AERB Officials Seal 8 X-ray Centres in City

BENGALURU: Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) officials from Mumbai conducted a surprise inspection of X-ray and CT scan facilities in the city on Wednesday and Thursday. They sealed eight of them for not possessing the mandatory licence for operations from the board.

AERB ensures radiation safety of medical diagnostic installations in the country by issuing licences for operation after verifying the compliance with regulatory requirements such as appropriate layout and shielding, qualified personnel, radiation safety officer, radiation protection accessories and quality assurance of X-ray equipment.

An AERB official, who was part of the team that conducted the checks, told Express that they took action against those centres which had not carried out periodic quality checks of X-ray equipment, had not provided personnel radiation monitoring badges to workers, had inappropriate layout and radiation shield, or lacked protective accessories.

“We have given them one month’s time to comply with the regulations. Depending on the measures taken by them, AERB will decide on the future course of action,” the official added.

Of the eight centres sealed by AERB, three each are located in Jayanagar and Indiranagar, while the two others are in Domlur and HSR Layout.
