BWSSB to Fix Penalty for Illegal Connections

BENGALURU: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) set up a three-member investigative committee on Wednesday to calculate the approximate penalty amount due from gated communities and private layouts which had illegally obtained water and sanitary connections within their premises.

The committee will also identify the BWSSB engineers who facilitated the process.

The committee, headed by the financial adviser, will have the assistant controller (revenue) and additional chief engineer (revenue) as members. It has been given a 15-day deadline to submit a report.

The Board has suffered a loss of at least Rs 500 crore. “The amount will be much higher as these apartments were supplied one kilo litre of water at Rs 7 instead of Rs 20 per kilo litre,” a top official said.

“We have lost Rs 13 for every kilo litre of water supplied to these layouts and communities over a few years, which is enormous.”
