Driver Molests Woman in Auto

BENGALURU: A 23-year-old woman has complained she was sexually assaulted by an auto driver and his friend late on Tuesday.

According to Cubbon Park police, the woman is from Gujarat, and had worked till recently at a garment showroom on Commercial Street.She hired an auto at 11.40 pm after dinner with a friend on M G Road. She directed the driver to take her to J C Nagar, where she lives.

On the way, another man jumped into the back and sat next to her. When she objected, the driver started arguing with her. The spat continued for a while. Eventually, the man sitting at the back said he would get off a little distance from Nandidurg Road. With just half a km to go, the driver stopped his auto and allegedly molested her. She screamed for help and two men on a bike stopped. The woman took the opportunity to escape and reach home.

Early in the morning, she went to the Cubbon Park police station and filed a complaint. “She got into the auto near Cauvery Emporium. We have CCTV footage from a commercial complex near the emporium,” a policeman said. The complainant said she had not noted down the auto’s registration number as she was in shock. “We are trying to track down the driver with the help of details she has provided,” he said.

The woman had quit her job on November 9 and was trying to find another.

Constable Caught Taking Bribe

Halasur Gate Police is under the Lokayukta scanner after one official was caught in a raid and another escaped on Wednesday.

Head constable Hanumantharayya was caught red-handing accepting Rs 15,000 from an accused. And police sub-inspector Kiran, and constable Umashankar escaped during a Lokayukta raid.

Vinod Jain, who was accused of pawning fake jewellery to a Manapuram firm, was taken into custodyon Tuesday. 

Due to a health complication suffered by his ailing mother, Jain requested the officials let him out on conditional bail so that he could fly to Delhi for his mother’s treatment, but the officials demanded Rs 50,000

as bribe. On a tip-off, Lokayukta raided when the transaction was taking place and caught the head constable red-handed while another escaped.

A case has been booked against the Halasur gate police under the Prevention of Corruption and Transparency Act.
