Tension Prevails in Bhoopasandra as Rumours Spark Protest

BENGALURU: Tension prevailed at Bhoopasandra in Sanjaynagar on Thursday night after a rumour spread that a Eid Milad banner was destroyed by unknown miscreants. Sanjaynagar police who rushed to the spot had to resort to a mild lathi charge to disperse a group who tried to stage a protest.

A senior police officer said the rumour was spread in the area that a banner was tied to a tree and after a while it was removed and set ablaze. A group gathered at the spot and then tried to stage a protest before informing the police. The locals who noticed the group alerted the police who rushed to the spot and convinced them not  to believe the incident. But after a while they again spread rumours of communal violence in the area and tried to create panic by shouting slogans.

Two people said to be behind the rumours have been arrested. On Friday morning senior police officials called a peace meeting with local leaders and convinced them to ensure peace in the area.
