HASSAN: The state government seems to have neglected the proposal to set up an elephant corridor to combat the man-elephant conflict in Sakleshpur and Alur taluks.
Files related to this vital project are reportedly gathering dust at the government level due to the negligent attitude of senior officials.
The district administration which submitted a report after studying the pros and cons of the project six months ago, is allegedly keeping mum over it.
According to the proposal, there are plans to set up an elephant corridor on 23,000 acres, 2,200 acres of private land belonging to 150 families in 12 villages in Vanagur and Hongadahalla GPs in Sakleshpur taluk are also part of the project.
DC Umesh Kusugal had held meetings to elicit public opinion at Kaginare and Mavanoor villages. The villagers have agreed to part with their land and they put forward some demands.
Sources said the government was planning to release compensation to the affected families on the lines of Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary package where farmers got compensation three times more than the market value of the land. The district administration’s proposal stated that Rs270 crore needed for land losers and Rs20 crore for building houses.
Krishnaiah, an affected farmer, said the need of the hour is to set up an elephant corridor to stop the man-elephant conflict in the area. An revenue official said the district authority will implement the project soon.
