For a Hearty Breakfast

For a Hearty Breakfast

HSR LAYOUT: The hunt for places that serve great breakfast is something every Bangalorean gets out on every once in a while. On New Year’s Day, however, that is not what we were doing while wandering the lanes of HSR Layout, hungover and bleary eyed. All we wanted was a large quantity of half-decent food that wouldn’t burn a hole in our pockets and by some strange luck, we  stumbled upon the Greasy Spoon on 27th Main in Sector 1.

After climbing two flights of stairs, we were welcomed by a foosball table at the entrance. Elegant black tables and comfortable chairs filled the compact diner, while the walls were adorned by posters of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Guns and Roses and the like. Seats on one side of the restaurant gave us a great view of the bustling 27th Main Road below, minus the sound of blaring horns and traffic, of course. Soft rock music played in the background, as we sat there watching a couple of people in party clothes file into the diner, discussing the previous night’s events.

We ordered the Full English Breakfast platter with chicken, a portion of pancakes and scrambled eggs on toast with cheese, along with a cappuccino and a mug of hot chocolate. Priced at Rs.220, the breakfast platter was yummy and very filling. The sausages, mushrooms and salami were well-cooked and succulent, although the toast was a tad dry and cold. The unusually tall mug of hot chocolate, on the other hand, was disappointing as it had very little chocolate in it. And the heart-shaped pancakes crumbled when we cut into it and tasted quite bland.

The service was laidback, friendly and fairly quick, probably because there were few people dining there that afternoon. The meal for two cost us a little over Rs.500 and when we stepped out, we were too full to complain.

The menu also features burgers, sandwiches, hotdogs and pastas. The All American Burger (beef burger with bacon, cheese and barbecue sauce) and the Mexican Chicken Burger (with salsa and garlic mayo) are recommended, while desserts like the Waffle Fantasy and Bananas Foster are a must-try.
