Garbage Contractor Slapped with Rs 25,000 Fine

BENGALURU:  BBMP Administrator T M Vijay Bhaskar on Friday slapped a penalty on a garbage contractor for not keeping a burial ground clean.

As part of an intensive cleaning drive on Friday, BBMP pourakarmikas and other staff cleaned 40 burial grounds. The administrator visited the crematorium at Kallapalli in Sarvagna Nagar ward and the burial ground at Shanthinagar. Both the premises were not kept clean. As per the conditions in the old garbage tender, it is the duty of contractors to keep the premises clean. At the Shanthinagar burial ground, the administrator slapped a `25,000 penalty on the garbage contractor and sent Assistant Executive Engineer Raghavendra back to his parent department for not executing his duty.

Later, Vijay Bhaskar visited the crematorium and also imposed a penalty of `25,000 on the garbage contractor, a release said. He also stated that in the new garbage contract, BBMP will remove the clause that holds garbage contractors responsible to clean crematoriums and graveyards. Instead, the BBMP Horticulture Department will be given the responsibility and the amount will be deducted from the contractors’ bill, he added.

BBMP Commissioner G Kumar Naik visited Gandhinagar ward and surrounding areas and interacted with pourakarmikas. He assured them they will get their salary on or before the first week of every month and salary will be sent directly to their account.
