State govt will amend Act which will give schools only academic relationship with the boards

BENGALURU: Even if your school is affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) or Indian Certificate for Secondary Education (ICSE), the state government will have complete control on you.

The state department of primary and secondary education is amending the Karnataka Education Act where it will get more control over private schools functioning in the state, irrespective of the boards.

Under existing norms, the state government’s job is restricted to only  issuing No Objection Certificate (NOC) to set up schools in the state. But with the new amendment to the Act, department will have more control on private schools.

The schools will have only academic relationship with the concerned board to which they are affiliated.

Speaking to Express, Tanveer Sait, State Primary and Secondary Education minister said, “Let them follow the curriculum and academic standards of other boards. But infrastructure, student safety and other things will be controlled by state government.”

According to the  minister, for day-to-day administration, schools have to follow the state rules. “This new rule will apply even for the existing schools and I have directed the officers to re-consider the existing schools,” explained Sait.

As per the information, department has taken this decision following some incidents when the recommendations by state government to withdraw the affiliation of some schools was not considered by the concerned CBSE and ICSE boards.

“When we have recommended for withdrawal of affiliation of a school where a child abuse was reported, the CBSE in turn asked us to withdraw the affiliation. As per the existing norms we cannot withdraw NOC, and for that we are bringing amendment. Once it is done, state will have authority to withdraw the NOC even without consulting the concerned boardthe affiliation will automatically stand cancelled,” said an official of the department.

For the current academic year the government issued NOC to seven new CBSE schools. All of them will fall under new norms and the same has been included in their NOC.
