Raise a cake to the moon, this season

Celebrate the Chinese harvest season with tart-like cakes

BENGALURU: As the harvest festival arrives, the Chinese start baking cakes to worship the moon. These moon cakes are considered essential delicacies in the mid-autumn season. Celebrating the spirit of the festival is Yauatcha, located on MG Road, with their Moon Cake Festival.

Chef Abhishek Bindal from the restaurant says, “Moon cake is a traditional dish prepared in the mid-autumn harvest festival in China. These baked-custard round cakes have different varieties of filling. Chinese also use the opportunity to reunite with friends and relatives as they share the cake with them.”

The cake served at the restaurant is sweet with ingredients like egg yolk infused in it. As you bite into it, you will be reminded of custard that we make at home. Though it is called a cake, it resembles a tart, is crunchy and buttery  on the outside. The cake melts in your mouth as you bite into it.

The moon cakes are served in four flavours – Jasmine Tea Moon Cake, Salted Caramel and Sesame Moon Cake, Coconut  and Mixed Nuts Moon Cake and the Zingy Lemon Zest Moon Cake. They are rich in texture, and though the traditional recipe includes egg, the restaurant has vegetarian options too.

The Coconut and Mixed Nuts Moon Cake has a predominant flavour of peanuts. It gets a little sticky as you eat. The filling in the Salted Caramel and Sesame Moon Cake is soft yet dense caramel paste. The Zingy Lemon Zest Moon Cake has a distinct citrusy aroma. The sour taste of lemon melds with the sweet taste.

These pastries go well with green tea ice cream. It is served  till September 30. Each piece would cost you `225.
