Be aware of alternative, unscientific treatments

BENGALURU: I am 55-year-old. I am depressed and suffering from neck and back pain. I got an MRI done. Doctor says that there is no major problem and advised tablet Maxgalin M 75 for two months but there is not much relief. Please give me some advise

This is a very common problem. These symptoms are commonly diagnosed as ‘Myalgia’, chronic strain, Myofacial Syndrome, etc. There will be no anatomical nor structural changes in the body. Hence MRI and other tests will be normal. They can be helped only by treating the depression by appropriate specialists if it co-exists, and physiotherapy for muscles. Active life style, physical activities and regular exercises will help them. These patients usually end up being seen by multiple doctors and often victims of so called alternative, non effective, unscientific treatments.

I am 25. I dislocated a shoulder bone in an accident in 2012. It’s been four years but I still get pain in the winters and on long bike-rides. The pain is severe and I feel like someone is pulling my nails. I had fractured my finger too. I cannot sleep on the right side even now. What can help reduce pain?

Shoulder dislocation is a traumatic separation of ball and sockets of the shoulder joint. During a dislocation there could be associated, variety of ligament injuries also. They should be assessed by an orthopaedic surgeon. If necessary X rays and MRI scans are taken. Depending on the exact nature of the ligament injury we could help them with physical rehabilitation or a key hole surgery. Finger injury should be treated separately like any other fracture.

I am 28. While getting off the metro during the peak hours, I felt a jerk and developed a back pain since. While getting up from the chair, I feel a severe pain in my back. What should I do?

This is because of the strain or full of the large muscles of the lower back. They are very common. They usually get better without treatment in a week or two. Painkillers for 3-5 days help them to control pain.

I fell on my knee during a bike accident in 2011. The muscles swelled up and I couldn’t rest because I couldn’t take off from work. It got worse and now when I walk or work out a lot, my knee hurts. I am 25. What can help?

These injuries should be assessed for internal derangements of the the knee. Knee is a weight bearing joint and hence its stability is important. Ligament injuries are very common sports injuries in the developed counties. However, these injuries are most commonly encountered due to bike accidents in India. These patients may commonly have either ligament or cartilage injuries. They are treated with physical treatment and rehabilation initially and if not better with key hole surgeries.
