Tuition teacher beats 9-year-old with belt for not doing homework

BENGALURU:  A tuition teacher has been booked for allegedly assaulting a nine-year-old student with a leather belt for not completing the assigned homework, in Nelamangala on Tuesday night.

Police said, “The victim is Bhavana, a student of St Joseph’s School and the daughter of a businessman. The tuition teacher is Latha (40). Both are residents of Subash Nagar in Nelamangala town.”

“On Tuesday, Bhavana went to tuition after her school hours. Around 8 pm, Latha allegedly hit her on the back with a leather belt for not completing the assigned work,” police added.

The incident came to light when Bhavana went home crying. There were some wounds on the girl’s back. Her father Shivakumar, who noticed the wounds, approached police and filed a complaint.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Latha has been a tuition teacher for more than 15 years. There were instances where she had allegedly assaulted under-performing students, but they were never reported.

“It’s shocking that whenever such instances occurred, parents blamed their children thinking that Latha was doing the right thing and their wards would study well,” said a police officer.

Police have booked a case under IPC Sections 324, 504 and Section 82 of Juvenile Justice Act.
