BENGALURU: A 26-year-old student, who was allegedly inebriated, drove her car over a 52-year-old pedestrian, killing him instantly, and injured two others on Wednesday night.

Bhavatharini N, a resident of Rajajinagar and MBA student from London, was returning home after attending a friend’s birthday party when the accident occurred near Lalbagh main gate. The deceased has been identified as Subramani, a tailor and resident of Thyappa Layout near Minerva Circle. The two others injured are Sujith (27), a healthcare worker and resident of Mavalli, and Honnappa (42).

On Wednesday at around 10.30 pm, Bhavatharini and a friend were returning after the party in Banashankari, when she lost control over her Verna while taking a turn near Lalbagh main gate. She crashed into the footpath ploughing into Subramani and Sujith, before hitting the compound wall of a house belonging to Honnappa, and also hitting a parked bike.   tests confirm

After the accident in which a pedestrian was killed and two others were injured, an angry mob gathered and assaulted Bhavatharini N, who was driving the car, while her friend managed to escape.

City Market traffic police, who rushed to the spot, took her to the station. Subramani was declared brought dead in hospital.

Sujith, who had sensed danger and managed to jump off the footpath, however, suffered some serious injuries. Honnappa, who was standing in front of his gate, received injuries on his hands.

Bhavatharini, who is pursuing MBA at the University of Westminster, London, was in the city to spend vacation with her parents.

She was sent to judicial custody till August 30 after medical tests confirmed presence of alcohol above permissible limits.

A senior police officer said she had also confessed to consuming alcohol at the party and driving the car.
