Internal probe begins into suicide bid by accused

A senior police officer initiated an internal probe into attempt to suicide by a habitual offender at Bommanahalli police station.

BENGALURU: A senior police officer on Sunday initiated an internal probe into attempt to suicide by a habitual offender at Bommanahalli police station on Saturday.

Ravi alias Chappar (23), a resident of Hosa Road near Electronics City, set himself ablaze on Saturday when police detained him in a robbery case. He was allegedly involved in bike theft and robbery cases during the last few months and three cases were filed against him.
During questioning, he went to the toilet on thepretext of attending nature’s call and set himself ablaze. He sustained severe burns.

Meanwhile, he is recovering in a hospital and said to be out of danger.
A senior police officer said, “Preliminary probe revealed that Ravi had a matchbox with him and he set the shirt he was wearing afire.”

One businessman Babu had filed a robbery case a week ago, accusing Ravi of stealing his bike before threatening him at knifepoint. He also took away `1,200 from his wallet the complainant alleged. Ravi was wanted in three similar cases.

“There was no petrol in the station when the incident took place. We will submit the report to senior officers soon,” police station staff added.
