BENGALURU: With a rise in dengue cases in the city, BBMP has introduced mosquito larvae eating fish into three lakes on Thursday.
Gambusia fish has been found to be effective in controlling breeding of mosquitoes by feeding on their larvae. About 1,000 fish were released into each lake - Sarakki, Puttenahalli and Begur. The palike intends to do the same in 24 water bodies in Bommanahalli zone in the next 3 days.
Dr. Savitha, health officer, said: “The method has been tried earlier in the East zone”. Senior Health Inspector Mahesh termed it a precautionary measure. Environmentalist A N Yellappa Reddy said the method is common in many countries.
