BENGALURU: The top ten engineering colleges in the state continue to ride high on the popularity charts with all the undergraduate seats in these colleges for the 2017-18 academic year being lapped up in the first round of CET counselling.

There were a total of 55,088 seats available across the state at 200-plus engineering colleges. Of the 38,700 candidates who have opted for seats in the first round of counselling, 11,450 students have confirmed their admissions in the top 10 colleges. The admission process for those who have decided not to attend the second round of counselling has also been completed.

Interestingly, the top 50 rank holders in the Common Entrance Test (CET) 2017 in engineering category have got admission at RV College of Engineering. “Getting a seat at RVCE is like getting placed in a top MNC in the country,” said one of the lucky students.

Of the 10, only one — University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), Bengaluru — is a government institute.

Students say the main reasons why the prefer the top 10 colleges is because of the academic quality and placement. “Even if you have scored well in CET, and also get a rank in engineering degree, if the college does not have an active placement cell, then it will be difficult to get placed during campus placements, “ said Pragati, a student.

According to Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA)  officials, a majority of students who have got seats at these colleges will not opt out. “They are not the ones who are waiting for NEET or any other results. They have good ranking in engineering and opted for the seats with the intention of pursuing engineering,” said an official.

KEA officials said, “There is no ranking of top 10 colleges, but this has been the trend from many years. We advise students not to wait in the hope of seats falling vacant in these colleges because very few students surrender seats.”

Prof K Mallikarjun Babu, principal of BMS College of Engineering said, “None of our seats will be available for the second round of counselling. This has been the trend for several years. In our college we give importance to quality teaching and overall development of students.”

Dr N V R Naidu, principal of MSRIT, said, “I can proudly say our placement is outstanding and every student will get placed. Our infrastructure is among the best. Our teachers keep upgrading their knowledge and this attracts students.”

Meanwhile, the option entry (seat selection) for second round will be open from Friday and the allotment of seats will be announced on July 17.
