BENGALURU: A 27-year-old history-sheeter who stabbed a constable during a routine check was arrested by Halasuru police near a gurdwara on Sunday. Police shot the man in his leg when he attacked the constable with a dagger.

The accused has been identified as Karthik, a resident of Gowthamapura. Police had set up barricades near DAD Quarters in Ulsoor for routine checks. Around 2am, Karthik was travelling from Domlur to Gowthampura when police flagged him down. When police asked him for the documents of the vehicle, he took out a dagger from a pouch on his bike’s fuel tank and stabbed constable Basavaraj. Karthik then fled from the spot.

Meanwhile, Basavaraj informed the police control room. Around 3am, inspector Subramanya along with police personnel who were on night duty found Karthik roaming near the gurdwara in Ulsoor. When Karthik used pepper spray on a police official and tried to assault them, Subramanya shot at him in the leg.

Karthik was rushed to Hosmat Hospital around 3.30am. Dr Thomas Chandy, chairman and chief of orthopaedics, said the bullet had caused injuries to Karthik’s right thigh and right knee.

Police said, “Karthik is a rowdy and faces several charges including rape, dacoity and robbery. He was recently released on bail in a rape case.”

Joint commissioner of police (crime) Satishkumar said, “Karthik attacked the constable with a dagger. Police fired at him in self defence. Once he recovers, we will take him into custody for further interrogation.”
