Officials begin trenching at Varthur lake

The work will continue on Wednesday as well along with marking of the area.

BENGALURU: After local residents highlighted the encroachment of Varthur Lake on Thubarahalli side, the tahsildar concerned, along with revenue officers and BDA officials, visited the spot on Tuesday and carried out trenching work. He confirmed that dumping of mud took place in the buffer zone of the lake.

The work will continue on Wednesday as well along with marking of the area.

The people responsible for the encroachment are yet to be identified. No formal complaints have been filed yet, but the issue has been brought to the notice of the police, the tahsildar said.

Jagdesh Reddy, the lake warden and local a resident, said, “If they want, they can identify the people behind the encroachment as we have the registration numbers of the trucks.”

Nearly 100 trucks made their way to the lake between 9.30 pm on Saturday and 6 am on Sunday and dumped earth on the Varthur lake bed. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) order clearly states that lakes have to have buffer zones of 75m. The encroachment has been going on for almost two weeks.
