Fire breaks out near Benniganahalli Lake

Residents alleged the fire spread from garbage dumped near the lake and said the flames died down after a while. This is not the first instance of a fire breaking out near the lake.

BENGALURU: A mild fire broke out on the edges of  Benniganahalli Lake on Friday morning. 

Residents alleged the fire spread from garbage dumped near the lake and said the flames died down after a while. This is not the first instance of a fire breaking out near the lake.

Residents say they have seen locals and even trucks dumping garbage near the lake and people setting fire to it.

Ram Prasad, a member of Friends of Lake, said, “Last time, a tree was engulfed in flames after fire spread from garbage dumped near it. We see autos and trucks dumping meat waste in the lake. Officials have been informed several times but in vain.”

Jerry George, a resident, said, “There have been instances when we have stopped trucks transporting garbage from Marathahalli to dump it in the lake.”

Karnataka Lake Conservation and Development Authority CEO Vidyasagar assured that he will direct BBMP officials to take necessary action.
