Bengaluru team wins big at national taekwondo tourney

Team which has trained at the 2 ASC Training Centre won a National Taekwondo Tournament

BENGALURU: A team which has trained at the 2 ASC Training Centre under the ASC Centre and College, Bangalore has aced a National Taekwondo Tournament held in Vishakpatnam, recently.
The team won medals in six of the eight categories at the 35th Senior National Kyorugi and 8th Poomsae Taekwondo Championship.

Of these three were medals and 3 others silver medals in the the men’s senior category in Kyorugi (fight). The team also bagged one gold and silver medal each in the in Poomsae (demonstration) event.  The team was felicitated on Wednesday by Brigadier Ashok Chowdhary, Commandant of the 2 ASC Training Centre, Havaldar Akshay Kumar, a team member who won gold in the above 87 category at the tournament says: "It is a great feeling to win the tournament."

He has been a professional player since the past 15 years and has won 4 gold medals each in the senior category and junior category tournaments. Last year he won two gold medals at the Heroes Taekwondo Championship and at another open taekwondo championship in Thailand. "I also participated in the South Asian games last year but was sadly not able to bring any medals. I wish to represent my country in the Olympics someday," he says.  

There were as many as 41 teams across the country from 37 states that participated in the tournament. These included teams from services such as the BSF, Indian Railways, CISF, CRPF and the All India Police to name a few. 

Subedar Rakesh, the team's coach who has been at the center since 2001 says that the team members practised very hard for their victory. "Practice comprises three training sessions of around two hours everyday," he says. Followng this victory the team members will now prepare for national tournaments in Rajasthan and are also preparing for the World Taekwondo Championship to be held in June in South Korea," he says. 

The ASC Centre team has previously won a number of national and international tournaments.  The ASC Centre and College has also liaised with various State and National Federations including the Karnataka Taekwondo Association based on principle of reciprocity to facilitate the flow of talent, exchange of ideas to incorporate modern tech and hone individual skills.

A special attention has been paid to the science of coaching and conditioning keeping in view the extreme physical nature of the sport, so as to squeeze out every possible ounce of advantage, says a release from the ASC centre
